Ukrainian ombudswoman reports on soldiers' harsh conditions after 40 days in trenches

The Ukrainian military ombudswoman has highlighted the deteriorating conditions and morale among soldiers who have spent extended periods on the frontline.

After 40 days in trenches, soldiers reportedly lose the will to survive, according to Olha Reshetylova, head of the military ombudswoman's office.

Since January 2026, the ombudswoman's office has received over 5,500 complaints from soldiers and their families, with more than a thousand cases requiring inspections.

The office serves as an advisory body to the president and intervenes to address issues raised by military personnel.

While cases of starvation among soldiers are rare, the psychological impact of prolonged frontline exposure is significant.

Reshetylova noted that soldiers often become apathetic after extended periods at the zero line, which negatively affects both their mental health and military effectiveness.

This issue has gained attention following the publication of photos showing emaciated soldiers from the 14th mechanised brigade who were not receiving adequate food supplies at the front.

The ombudswoman's office intervened in at least one case last year, resulting in the delivery of food and water and the temporary withdrawal of affected soldiers for recovery.

The prolonged deployment in frontline positions, sometimes lasting weeks or months, is common and has a detrimental effect on soldiers' psyche.

Reshetylova emphasized the need for commanders to consider these psychological effects in their operational planning.

The ombudswoman's office is currently preparing an extensive study on the psychological state of fighters during long-term stays at frontline positions.

This research aims to provide commanders with data to improve soldier welfare and combat readiness.

The establishment of the military ombudswoman's office earlier this year reflects an institutional effort to address the welfare concerns of Ukrainian soldiers amid ongoing conflict.

The office's role includes verifying complaints and working with military leadership to resolve issues.
