US Considers Reducing Troops in Germany Amid Iran War Row

The United States is reviewing the possibility of reducing its troop presence in Germany, according to President Donald Trump.

This consideration comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Germany over the ongoing conflict in Iran.

President Trump announced on social media that a decision regarding the potential troop reduction would be made in the near future.

Currently, the US maintains over 36,000 active-duty military personnel in Germany, which represents a significant portion of its forces stationed in Europe.

The troop presence in Germany has decreased substantially since the Cold War, when approximately 250,000 US troops were based there.

The current review follows recent diplomatic friction between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly regarding Germany's stance on the Iran war.

The dispute intensified after Chancellor Merz commented that Iran was gaining the upper hand in negotiations, a remark that drew criticism from President Trump.

Despite the disagreement, Chancellor Merz stated that relations with the US president remain good.

In parallel, Germany's top general, Carsten Breuer, met with US Defense Undersecretary Elbridge Colby and other officials to discuss Germany's new military strategy, which aims to strengthen its conventional forces and leadership role in Europe outside the NATO framework.

Undersecretary Colby praised Germany's military strategy, emphasizing the need for Europe to increase its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on NATO as a "paper tiger." General Breuer noted the US officials' appreciation for Germany's commitment but did not indicate that troop reductions were discussed during the meeting.

The US administration's consideration of troop reductions appears linked to broader concerns about NATO allies' contributions, especially regarding naval support to secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the Iran conflict.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also engaged in talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, reflecting ongoing diplomatic efforts.
