Man appears in court over attempted car bomb attack on Lurgan PSNI station

A 47-year-old man has appeared in court charged over an attempted car bomb attack on Lurgan PSNI station in Northern Ireland.

The case is now before Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Barry Anthony Toman, of Drumnamoe Avenue in Lurgan, appeared by videolink.

He is charged with attempted murder, attempting to cause an explosion, hijacking by compelling a person to drive a car carrying an improvised explosive device, and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

The court heard that a pizza delivery driver was hijacked in Kilwilkie and forced to drive a pipe bomb to the station on the night of 30 March.

Dissident republicans had claimed responsibility for the incident, according to the court hearing.

The case matters because it concerns an alleged attack on a police station involving an improvised explosive device and a forced driver, with serious charges now before the court.

It also comes amid continuing scrutiny of dissident republican activity in the area.

The available details identify the alleged route of the device and the date of the incident, but do not set out the full circumstances of the attack or any damage caused.
