Ukraine says six dead after Russia launches more than 800 drones
Ukraine says six people have been killed after Russia launched one of its largest drone attacks of the war so far, with at least 800 drones sent into Ukrainian airspace during the day.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the assault was still under way when he posted the update.
Zelenskyy said the drones were launched from midnight on Wednesday local time and warned that further missile strikes were also possible.
He said the attack had caused damage across the country.
A presidential adviser said Russian strikes hit Ukrainian railway facilities 23 times during the course of Wednesday.
Poland's military later said the attack on Ukraine had concluded for the time being, while Slovakia said it had indefinitely closed its border crossings with Ukraine for security reasons.
The scale of the assault makes it one of the most significant aerial attacks reported since the start of the war.
It also comes after a short-lived ceasefire between the two sides to mark the anniversary of the Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany over the weekend.
Zelenskyy said Russia appeared to be trying to disrupt the political atmosphere and draw attention away from Ukraine.
