Death toll rises to 24 after large Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv

Russia's large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine has killed at least 24 people, with the capital Kyiv the main target, according to Ukrainian emergency services.

Dozens more were injured in the assault, which began as a rare daytime strike on Wednesday and continued into Thursday.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 675 attack drones and 56 missiles, mainly at Kyiv.

It said air defence units downed 652 drones and 41 missiles.

In Kyiv's Darnytsia district, emergency workers searched under concrete slabs after a nine-storey residential building collapsed, destroying all 18 apartments in the block.

Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said nine people were killed there, including a 12-year-old girl, and about 20 people were believed missing.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims.

Flags were to be flown at half-mast and entertainment events prohibited.

The attack also hit homes, residential apartment blocks and other civilian infrastructure.
