Thomas Massie loses Trump-backed Kentucky Republican primary

US Congressman Thomas Massie has lost his bid for re-election in Kentucky's Republican primary, after a challenge backed by President Donald Trump. Ed Gallrein, a former Navy Seal, will now go forward to the November midterm election after winning the contest on Tuesday. The result was seen as a direct test of Trump's influence over the Republican Party and over lawmakers who have broken with him on key votes.

The primary was described as the most expensive House primary in the history of the US House of Representatives. Trump repeatedly urged voters to back Gallrein and attacked Massie in public remarks and social media posts. On Monday, Trump called Massie "an obstructionist and a fool", while earlier describing him as a "major sleazebag" and "the worst Republican congressman in history".

Massie has represented Kentucky since 2012 and has been one of the most vocal Republican critics of Trump. He broke with the president over his tax and spending legislation last year, citing concerns about the national debt. He also voted to limit Trump's attacks on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean and his war in Iran, and joined Democrats and a small number of Republicans in pushing for the release of Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The campaign also drew in senior figures from Trump's administration. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth campaigned for Gallrein in Kentucky and accused Massie of "constant obstruction". Massie responded that Hegseth's presence suggested the challenger was not comfortably ahead.

He said Trump and his allies wanted "100% compliance", while arguing that his own votes reflected promises he had made to voters in Kentucky. The result matters because it underlines how far Trump is willing to go to shape the Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections. It also shows the political risk for lawmakers who resist him on spending, foreign policy or investigations involving his administration.

For Republicans, the outcome may encourage closer alignment with the president's agenda, especially in contested primaries where his endorsement remains influential. The race took place against the backdrop of a broader struggle inside the party over loyalty, discipline and the limits of dissent. Massie's defeat follows a campaign in which Trump and his allies treated the primary as a referendum on his authority, rather than only on local issues.

What remains unclear is how Gallrein will position himself in the general election and whether Massie's loss will deter other Republicans from breaking with Trump in future votes.
