India appoints Mahesh Dixit as next Intelligence Bureau chief
India's Union Government has appointed Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service officer, as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He will succeed Tapan Deka, who has led the agency for the past four years. The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, according to an order from the Department of Personnel and Training.

The order says Dixit, who is currently Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, will serve a two-year term from the date he assumes charge. He is an Andhra Pradesh cadre officer and has spent more than 26 years in the agency. His career has included postings in Kohima, Patna and Hyderabad, as well as work at the bureau headquarters before being sent to Kashmir.
A significant part of Dixit's experience has been in Jammu and Kashmir, where he served in two separate periods. The first ran from 2009 to 2012, a time marked by major attacks on security forces and civilians, along with violent protests and stone-pelting. He returned to the region from 2020 to 2025, after the constitutional changes of 2019 altered the security environment.
During that later period, the security establishment faced what the report describes as the emergence of hybrid terrorists targeting Kashmiri Pandits and migrant workers. The appointment matters because the Intelligence Bureau is one of India's main domestic intelligence agencies and plays a central role in internal security assessments. Leadership changes at the top of the bureau can shape how the government responds to threats ranging from militancy to unrest and targeted violence.

Dixit's long experience in Kashmir suggests continuity in a portfolio that has remained sensitive for the Indian state. His background also reflects the bureau's reliance on officers with field experience in regions facing persistent security challenges. The report says he began his career as the superintendent of police in Vizag district before joining the Intelligence Bureau.
It also notes that he has worked across several postings over more than two decades, giving him experience in both operational and headquarters roles. What remains unclear is the exact date on which Dixit will assume charge and whether any immediate policy changes will follow the transition. The government has not announced any further details beyond the appointment order.
Attention will now turn to how he manages the bureau's priorities as he takes over from Deka.
