India announces major military leadership reshuffle across Army and Air Force
India has announced a series of senior military leadership changes, with new appointments across the Army and Air Force taking effect on Wednesday. General Dhiraj Seth took over as the 31st Chief of Army Staff, while Lt Gen Sandeep Jain became the Army's Vice-Chief. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit was appointed Vice-Chief of the Air Staff, and Air Marshal Tejinder Singh took charge as the new Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The changes affect some of the country's most senior defence posts and were made as part of a wider reshuffle in the armed forces. General Seth is the third Army Chief from the 2nd Lancers, one of India's oldest armoured regiments, and the first officer from the Armoured Corps to be appointed Army Chief in the past 30 years. Air Marshal Dixit had been serving as Chief of Integrated Defence Staff before moving to the Air Force vice-chief role after the retirement of Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor.
Lt Gen Jain previously served as Southern Army Commander before taking over as Vice-Chief of the Army. According to the details provided, he was commissioned into the Mahar Regiment in June 1988 and has held command and staff roles in India and in United Nations missions. Air Marshal Singh, who became CISC, was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in June 1987 and has more than 4,500 flying hours.
He previously served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Air Command. The appointments matter because they shape the leadership of India's armed forces at a time when the military continues to manage a broad range of operational responsibilities. The officers named in the reshuffle bring experience from conventional warfare, counter-insurgency operations, high-altitude deployments and international peacekeeping missions.

That background is significant for a military that must balance border security, internal security duties and wider defence planning across multiple commands. The new Army chief's background is notable for its armoured corps lineage, while the incoming vice-chief and air leadership figures have experience in both operational flying and integrated defence planning. Air Marshal Dixit's record includes work on exercises and operations such as Safed Sagar, Rakshak, Cope India and Sindoor, according to the supplied material.
Lt Gen Jain's service record includes postings in the Line of Control region, the Northeast and with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and Ethiopia. It remains unclear whether the reshuffle will be followed by further changes in other commands or whether it signals a broader transition in India's defence leadership. The immediate focus will be on how the new appointees settle into their roles and whether any policy or operational priorities shift under the new command structure.
Further official announcements would be needed to show whether this is a routine rotation or part of a wider strategic realignment.
