Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off eastern Indonesia, with no tsunami threat reported
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia on Friday, shaking parts of North Maluku province. The tremor was recorded west of Tobelo at a depth of 120 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake occurred at 11:31 local time, which was 02:31 GMT, and was centred about 58 kilometres west of Tobelo. Residents in nearby Ternate reported feeling the shaking, including one person who said a chair began rocking while they were sitting at a roadside stall. The Indonesia Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the event did not pose a tsunami threat.
The depth of the earthquake is significant because deeper quakes can be felt over a wider area while sometimes causing less surface damage than shallower events of similar magnitude. Even so, the shaking was strong enough to be noticed in communities across the region. North Maluku sits in one of the most seismically active parts of Indonesia, where earthquakes are common.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense volcanic and tectonic activity that stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin. That setting makes the country vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and occasional tsunamis. The latest tremor adds to the ongoing need for monitoring in eastern Indonesia, where populated islands and coastal communities can be affected by sudden seismic events.

At this stage, officials have not reported any injuries, structural damage or secondary hazards linked to the quake. It is also not yet clear whether there were any aftershocks or whether local authorities carried out further checks in the affected area.
