In the Middle East, Iran has staged a major funeral procession in Tehran for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the body later reaching Qom for further rites, while officials used the ceremonies to project defiance and Iran separately rejected Donald Trump’s military threat and warned Washington against aggression as nuclear talks remain paused.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Security tensions also rose around the Gulf after a tanker travelling southbound off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unknown projectile and caught fire, with investigators still working to establish what happened.  🔗

In Africa, violence in Darfur has intensified, with multiple villages razed in attacks blamed on the Rapid Support Forces and dozens reported killed, while the UN warned of rising attacks on children.  🔗 The Democratic Republic of the Congo is also facing a deepening Ebola outbreak, with the death toll now above 500, according to the World Health Organization.  🔗

China is dealing with several emergencies at once, after Typhoon Maysak triggered flooding in southern Guangxi and a reservoir wall broke in Nanning, killing at least two, while a landslide in Gansu has left 16 people still buried.  🔗  🔗  🔗 Beijing is also under fresh scrutiny after what appears to be its first submarine launched intercontinental ballistic missile test into the Pacific, and a former Nanjing official was sentenced to death in a huge bribery case involving more than 2.2bn yuan.  🔗  🔗

Across Asia, India and Indonesia signed agreements in Jakarta covering BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Astra air to air missile systems, defence technology and critical minerals, but the deal is now under scrutiny after an Indian origin businessman was accused of posing as a CIA operative to gain access to senior Indonesian officials.  🔗  🔗 In Bangladesh, at least three people were injured when a bomb exploded at a student led rally in Savar near Dhaka.  🔗

In Europe and North America, Canada chose Germany’s TKMS, working with Norway, for a submarine programme worth up to 12 boats, ahead of the Nato summit, while Nato leaders are preparing to unveil arms deals worth tens of billions of dollars in Ankara.  🔗  🔗 Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Syria for talks with President Ahmed al Sharaa, and an Austrian court in Vienna has convicted two former Syrian security officials over torture and sexual abuse.  🔗  🔗

Elsewhere, Morocco says it has dismantled an ISIL linked cell planning an attack, Nigeria has warned that anti immigrant violence in South Africa is worsening after two Nigerians were killed, and a UN rights body has demanded the release of detained Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safia, saying he is in imminent danger.  🔗  🔗  🔗 Peru’s Roberto Sanchez has conceded the presidential race to Keiko Fujimori after the electoral authority certified her narrow victory.  🔗

Financial glimpse

Wall Street closed sharply higher, with the Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow all advancing as megacap technology led the move, while gold and crypto also rallied and chips and energy lagged.  🔗
