Weapons Found Near Synagogue Trigger Evacuation in Sarcelles, North of Paris
Three hundred people were evacuated on Saturday evening from a neighbourhood in Sarcelles, north of Paris, after reports of a suspicious vehicle near one of the town's synagogues. Police found guns inside the parked car, including what the interior minister described as a military-grade weapon. French anti-terror prosecutors later opened an investigation into suspected terrorist criminal organisation and weapons offences.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the vehicle was discovered in a busy area close to a cinema and restaurants, prompting a security cordon and the evacuation of nearby residents and visitors. According to the information released, bomb disposal experts found no explosives in the car. A police source said the stolen vehicle contained an assault-style rifle and a handgun, while the prosecutors said the case concerns the preparation of attacks on people and the transport, possession and acquisition of weapons in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
Nunez said the motives were not yet known and that the individuals involved had not been identified. The incident took place in Sarcelles, a suburb with a large Jewish population, and near several synagogues, which added to the sensitivity of the response. The evacuation was carried out in the early evening as officers secured the area and examined the vehicle.
The case comes at a time when French authorities have repeatedly warned about the need for vigilance against antisemitic threats and other forms of politically motivated violence. The opening of an anti-terror investigation indicates that investigators are treating the discovery as more than a routine weapons offence. It also places the incident within a broader security environment in which public spaces, religious sites and crowded neighbourhoods remain under close watch.

Nunez said three attacks had been foiled since the start of the year, including a knife attack last February on a gendarme beneath the Arc de Triomphe during the ceremony to rekindle the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. That reference underlines the continuing focus on prevention by French security services, especially in cases involving weapons and possible extremist intent. Sarcelles has now become the latest location where police have had to respond quickly to a potential threat near a place of worship.
What remains unclear is who left the vehicle, whether the weapons were intended for an attack, and whether the case is linked to any wider network. Prosecutors have not identified suspects, and officials have not said whether arrests have been made. The next developments are likely to depend on forensic analysis of the vehicle, tracing the weapons and identifying the people connected to the car.
