Ukrainian drone strikes kill at least 3 in Russia's Moscow region
At least three people were killed and five others wounded in Russia's Moscow region after a drone attack, according to the regional governor. The incident was reported on Monday and was said to have hit the settlement of Pionersky in Istra. Officials said the strike was part of a wider overnight wave of drone attacks across the region.

Governor Andrey Vorobyov said on Telegram that three people were killed in Pionersky when a drone fell there, and that three more were wounded in the same settlement. He added that two additional people were injured elsewhere in the Moscow region. Vorobyov also said air defences shot down 81 drones over the region, indicating the scale of the attack.
The reported deaths and injuries add to the human cost of a cross-border drone campaign that has become a regular feature of the war. Ukraine has been intensifying strikes on Russian targets, particularly energy-related sites, in what Kyiv describes as retaliation for Russian attacks on its own territory. The Moscow region, which surrounds the Russian capital, is among the most sensitive areas to be targeted because of its political and symbolic importance.
The attack comes as Ukraine and Russia continue to exchange long-range strikes despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce the fighting. The row also follows months in which both sides have sought to disrupt each other's military and economic capacity through drones and missiles. In this context, even limited strikes inside the Moscow region carry significance beyond the immediate casualties, because they show the reach of Ukraine's drone operations and the strain on Russian air defences.

The governor's account did not give further details about the victims or the type of drone involved. It was also not immediately clear how many drones were launched in total, beyond the 81 that officials said were intercepted over the region. The extent of damage in Pionersky and elsewhere in the Moscow region was not fully specified.
What happens next will depend on whether Russian officials release more information about the attack and whether Ukraine comments on the strike. It remains unclear whether the incident will lead to further retaliatory action or changes in air defence measures around Moscow. For now, the attack stands as one of the deadliest reported drone incidents in the region in this phase of the war.
