Russian and Ukrainian strikes on civilian areas across several parts of Ukraine killed at least 13 people yesterday, according to local officials. In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian guided bomb attack killed three people and wounded 15, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said. In Odesa, Russian missiles hit the Black Sea port city and killed two people, with Deputy Mayor Oleksandr Filatov confirming the fatalities at the scene. Other officials said eight people, including two children, were wounded there.

Residential buildings, vehicles and other civilian property were among the structures damaged in the city. Outside Kharkiv, near the Russian border, a Russian drone attack killed one person, according to the national emergency services. Earlier in the day, another drone attack near Kupiansk killed three people.

In Donetsk region, the regional governor said one person was killed and five injured near Kramatorsk, an area that has seen heavy fighting along the front line. On the other side of the border, local officials in Belgorod Region said one person was killed when Ukrainian forces shelled a settlement near the border, while the Moscow-installed head of parts of Donetsk region under Russian control said one person had died in an area held by Russian forces. The latest deaths underline the continuing toll of the war on civilians in both front-line and rear-area locations.

Zaporizhzhia has come under intensified attack in recent weeks, while Odesa remains a frequent target because of its role as a major Black Sea port. Donetsk region, including the area around Kramatorsk, remains one of the main focal points of fighting along the 1,200-kilometre front line. The strikes also highlight the spread of attacks across a wide geographic area, from the south-east to the north-east and east of Ukraine.

Civilian sites such as homes, a religious institution and a pre-school were among the damaged locations, adding to the disruption faced by residents in areas already affected by the war. The reported deaths in Belgorod Region and in Russian-controlled parts of Donetsk also show that cross-border fire continues to affect communities on both sides. The United Nations has said June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, a reminder of the scale of the conflict's human cost.

The latest figures come as local authorities continue to report daily strikes, with many accounts still difficult to independently verify in wartime conditions. Reuters could not independently verify the reports from either side. What remains unclear is the full extent of the damage and whether the casualty figures will rise as more information becomes available.
