Nicolas Maduro returns to New York court for third hearing in US drug trafficking case

Venezuela's ousted president Nicolas Maduro is due to appear before a New York court on Wednesday for a third public hearing in his US drug trafficking case. The hearing is procedural, but it could confirm a proposed June 2027 trial date. Maduro's wife, Cilia Flores, is also being held in Brooklyn and remains part of the same case.

In a court filing late on Tuesday, prosecutors and defence lawyers jointly proposed the June 2027 date. Judge Alvin Hellerstein could approve that timetable at the hearing. Both Maduro and Flores have pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking, firearms and related charges, and neither has asked to be released on bail.

The case has drawn attention because it involves a former head of state facing serious criminal allegations in the United States. Prosecutors say Maduro conspired to traffic thousands of tonnes of cocaine into the country by working with Venezuelan law enforcement officials and drug traffickers. If convicted by a jury, he could face a life sentence, according to the charges described in the case.

The proceedings also follow a January US military operation that led to Maduro's capture and transfer to Brooklyn. US officials have described that raid as a surgical law enforcement operation in a criminal case first brought six years ago. Maduro has rejected the allegations and described himself as a prisoner of war, while his lawyer has said the defence intends to challenge the legality of what he calls a military abduction.
