Breakfast News Recap: Pakistan attack, West Bank violence and Iran tensions dominate a grim global briefing

Pakistan faced one of its deadliest attacks in years after a suicide bombing hit a security checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing 27 people as the search for those behind the assault continued.  🔗 The country was also battling deadly monsoon flooding and landslides, with at least 37 people killed in rain related incidents and India rejecting Pakistani allegations over the Chenab river.  🔗

In the Middle East, Israel said it is preparing a wider military operation in the occupied West Bank after clashes near Tal left four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead.  🔗 The violence came as Netanyahu confirmed he will visit Washington next week and meet Donald Trump on Tuesday, while UNESCO added six sites in the occupied West Bank and Lebanon to its endangered World Heritage list.  🔗  🔗

Tensions around Iran and the Gulf intensified further. Oman sent a delegation to Tehran to discuss shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as regional strikes disrupted maritime routes, while Iran said it had targeted US bases in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait in retaliation for American strikes.  🔗  🔗 Saudi Arabia also struck Houthi targets in Yemen after the group announced a maritime campaign, and the Indian Embassy in Tehran said all 28 crew on the LPG tanker Disha were safe after an attack in Iranian waters.  🔗  🔗

President Donald Trump said he had not yet made a final decision on major new strikes against Iran, even as military action remained under discussion.  🔗 He also said Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin had told him China and Russia would not sell weapons to Iran, and separately threatened an investigation into the European Union and a substantial tariff over tech fines.  🔗  🔗

In Europe, wildfires forced nearly 30,000 evacuations across France and Spain as extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds drove the blazes onward, with EU support expanding.  🔗 In Britain, Police Scotland declared a major incident over a wildfire in the Cairngorms near Nethy Bridge, while firefighters in England were still battling a moorland blaze on Tintwistle Moor in the Peak District more than a month after it began.  🔗  🔗 An explosion and fire at an industrial site near Rettendon in Essex was brought under control after more than 100 firefighters were sent to the scene.  🔗

Elsewhere in Europe and the wider region, Romania said it shot down a suspected Russian drone after it entered its airspace near the Black Sea, the first such interception since the war in Ukraine began.  🔗 The International Criminal Court also voted to remove chief prosecutor Karim Khan after a misconduct finding, and Venezuela told the United Nations it would withdraw from the court, accusing it of bias.  🔗  🔗

In Asia Pacific, Australia’s Labor conference adopted the party’s Israel and Palestine platform without a floor fight, while China said water conservancy investment reached 515.1 billion yuan, or about US$75.82 billion, in the first half of 2026.  🔗  🔗 Indonesia meanwhile began construction of the US$15 billion Makassar Strait North Hub gas project, a major national strategic development aimed at unlocking ultra deepwater gas reserves.  🔗

In North America, Trump attacked the media and joked about a 2028 run at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, while in Canada the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened without US officials amid worsening trade tensions.  🔗  🔗 In the domestic legal system, a Washington man was sentenced to 96 months for an April 2024 shooting, and federal prosecutors in Southern California filed 122 border related cases this week.  🔗  🔗
