A rare and powerful tornado struck north-east Wisconsin on Monday, damaging homes and leaving a 12-mile path of destruction through parts of Appleton and Menasha. The storm lasted 26 minutes before dissipating over Lake Winnebago. In the same weather episode, a meteotsunami was reported on the lake, causing unusual swings in water level.

The US National Weather Service classified the tornado as an EF3, which made it the fourth tornado of that strength to hit Wisconsin in 2026. The agency said EF3 tornadoes are relatively rare in north-east Wisconsin, and the total for this year is already the state's highest since 1984. Despite the scale of the damage, only a few injuries were reported.

The tornado struck in the afternoon, which likely reduced the number of people caught in its path because many were at work. Several homes were destroyed in the affected area, and the damage was described as widespread. The meteotsunami on Lake Winnebago added to the unusual nature of the event, with water levels falling by about 0.6 metres before surging back.

Meteotsunamis are not driven mainly by wind, but by air-pressure disturbances often linked to severe thunderstorms. They can produce waves that last much longer than ordinary wind-driven waves, making them a rare but recognised hazard on large lakes.
