Israeli settlers pitch tents for new outpost near Ramallah as Qusra siege enters second week
Israeli settlers have pitched tents in the Wadi Zeytun area near the village of Umm Safa, northwest of Ramallah, in what was described as an attempt to establish a new outpost in the occupied West Bank. A separate outpost attempt was also reported in the village of Burqa on the same day. The developments come as a settler siege on three families in Qusra, south of Nablus, entered a second week.

Reporting from Ramallah, Tharwat Shakra said the Wadi Zeytun encroachment was part of a wider pattern of settlement expansion in the area. The Palestinian news agency Wafa also reported the move, saying that if the new outpost is established, the number of outposts surrounding Umm Safa and Burqa would rise to six. According to the report, settlers have seized roughly 4,700 of Umm Safa's 4,800 dunams and 10,000 of Burqa's 12,000 dunams, underscoring the scale of land pressure on both villages.
In Qusra, 15 Palestinians, including two children, were said to be trapped in their homes in the Ras al-Ain area as the siege continued. Israeli soldiers reportedly rotated their positions and erected a tent in front of residents' homes after dismantling one that settlers had tried to put up there over the previous two days. Municipal crews later restored electricity and water lines to the besieged families, indicating that the disruption had affected basic services as well as movement.
The incidents add to long-running tensions in the occupied West Bank, where settlement outposts are widely viewed as a flashpoint in the conflict. Outposts are typically smaller than formal settlements, but they can still alter control on the ground and deepen friction between settlers and Palestinian communities. The reported attempts near Ramallah, together with the siege in Qusra, point to a coordinated pattern of pressure across several locations on the same day.

The report also cited comments from United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who warned that Israel was using settlers to advance ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. It remains unclear whether the new tent encampments in Wadi Zeytun and Burqa will become permanent outposts, and what further action Israeli forces or Palestinian authorities may take in response.
