USS George Washington arrives in the Arabian Sea amid carrier rotation concerns
The USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea as part of a scheduled deployment, according to US Central Command. The move comes as the carrier is expected to replace the USS Lincoln in the Middle East. It also follows renewed scrutiny of the Lincoln after reports of difficult conditions aboard the ship.

CENTCOM said on Thursday that the George Washington arrived on Wednesday. The carrier had previously been deployed to the Western Pacific before being sent to the region. The shift leaves the US without an aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific, despite Washington's strategic focus on that area.
The Lincoln was announced last week to be rotating back to the US after a prolonged deployment. It left San Diego last November and was later rerouted after the US and Israel launched their war with Iran on February 28. The ship set a US naval record for the longest deployment without a port stop, and the reported conditions aboard it have drawn criticism from lawmakers and military families.
Reports cited paltry food and hygiene supplies, maintenance problems, and strain on mental health among the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines on board. Family members described the toll of the mission, including accounts of individuals seeking to jump overboard. Several Democratic legislators have said the situation reflects poor planning for the war, which has become a grinding asymmetrical conflict with no clear end in sight.

The carrier rotation matters because it affects US force posture in a region where tensions remain tied to the conflict with Iran. Iran has continued to say it will assert its influence over the Strait of Hormuz, while the US says it has made progress in increasing traffic through the waterway. The Trump administration has said it can maintain its blockade on Iran's ports indefinitely, underscoring the continuing military and economic stakes in the area.
What remains unclear is how long the George Washington will stay in the Middle East and whether the Lincoln's return will ease the criticism over carrier readiness and crew welfare. There is also no indication that talks between the US and Iran will resume soon, after an earlier memorandum of understanding expired on Monday. The deployment therefore leaves open questions about the next phase of US naval planning in both the Middle East and the Western Pacific.
