Day News Recap: Ukraine strike death toll climbs as Nepal flood disaster and Iran tensions deepen

The death toll from a Russian strike on an arms depot near Kyiv has risen to 38, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after the blast and fires tore through the site and surrounding area.  🔗

Ukraine also warned that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been without external electricity for more than a week, with the International Atomic Energy Agency saying the loss of off site power remains a serious safety concern.  🔗

In the Himalayas, the scale of the disaster in Nepal and Tibet has grown sharply, with at least 750 people now confirmed dead and more than 3,000 missing after floods and mudslides swept through mountain communities near the Chinese border.  🔗 Rescuers in Nepal are still trying to reach hydropower workers believed trapped in flood swamped tunnels, but rain is hampering the search around the Trishuli area.  🔗

In the Middle East, Iran is keeping the Strait of Hormuz heavily restricted as the war continues to disrupt Gulf energy flows, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has urged Gulf states to identify their real enemy and called for Muslim unity against the United States and Israel.  🔗  🔗 A separate report says the war with Iran is now deepening pressure on civilians and shipping after more than six months of conflict.  🔗

There were also fresh signs of regional strain at sea, with Turkiye summoning Ukraine's ambassador after two Turkish operated vessels were struck in the Black Sea this week.  🔗 In Israel, Yair Netanyahu was urgently flown back from the United States after what domestic intelligence described as a threat, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir drew condemnation after posting prison footage of Palestinian women detainees.  🔗  🔗

Across Africa, Niger said forces were gradually regaining control after a mutiny in Niamey, with the defence ministry reporting that the unrest began on Saturday and that there were claims of Russian help.  🔗 In Zambia, opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been charged with treason after a deadly raid and detention that have intensified post election tensions.  🔗

Elsewhere, the United Nations said 13 people kidnapped during a major gang attack in Kenscoff, Haiti, have been released, including six children.  🔗 At sea off Somalia, Turkish and Somali forces freed the Cameroon flagged cargo vessel MV Latuf after a 10 day anti piracy operation near Puntland.  🔗

In the Americas, Washington said it has reached a deal with Caracas that would give the United States majority control of a substantial share of Venezuela's oil reserves, although Venezuela said it would retain sovereignty and ownership of the resources.  🔗  🔗 Donald Trump also said the United States will begin refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve with Venezuelan oil.  🔗
