On Tuesday, six areas in Sarawak recorded air quality readings above 300 on Malaysia's Air Pollutant Index, a level classed as hazardous. In Kuching, the state capital, the index reached 407, while Serian, near the Kalimantan border, recorded 408. The smoke has been drifting from fires in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, and has lingered over Sarawak for much of August.

The haze has forced the cancellation of outdoor Independence Day celebrations in parts of the state and added pressure on health services. Malaysia's Ministry of Health said illness had risen sharply nationwide during the week of August 23 to 29, with asthma cases increasing to 1,811 from 219 the previous week. Conjunctivitis cases also rose to 720 from 146, according to the ministry.

Residents in Kuching described thick smoke, reduced visibility and repeated trips to emergency care for children with breathing problems. The episode matters because it is not only a local pollution event but a cross-border public-health emergency. The smoke has affected multiple countries and revived memories of the region's 2015 haze crisis, when fires in Indonesia exposed tens of millions of people to toxic smoke and caused more than 500,000 respiratory illnesses.

The current situation shows how fires in one part of Borneo can quickly become a regional problem, especially when dry conditions allow smoke to travel widely. The fires are burning in forest and peatland areas, which are especially difficult to control once ignited. Peat fires can smoulder for long periods and release dense smoke, making them a recurring source of haze in Southeast Asia.

The current smoke has settled most heavily over Sarawak, but its spread to other parts of Malaysia and neighbouring states underlines the scale of the outbreak. One mother in Kuching said the air had become so thick that visibility from her home had fallen to about one kilometre.

She said her 10-month-old daughter, who had recently returned home after a lung infection, had continued coughing and vomiting and had twice needed emergency treatment because she could not breathe. Such accounts point to the strain on households already dealing with existing health problems. The haze also has wider economic and social implications, particularly when outdoor events are cancelled and daily movement becomes harder.

Poor air quality can affect schools, tourism, transport and work routines, while also increasing demand for medical care. The fact that the smoke has reached several countries suggests that any response will need coordination beyond state or national borders. What remains unclear is how long the fires will continue and whether weather conditions will help disperse the smoke.
