Noontime News Recap: Israel warns of renewed Gaza war as deadly strikes and global security cases mount

Israel's defence minister has said it is only a matter of time before the country resumes full scale war in Gaza and presses ahead with a migration plan for Palestinians, even as the United States approved a major weapons sale to Israel. In Gaza City, at least 20 people, including five children, were killed when a war damaged building collapsed in the Tal al Hawa area during rescue efforts. The collapse underlines the continuing danger from damaged infrastructure and the strain on emergency crews working in the enclave.  🔗

Regional tensions also remained high around the Red Sea and holy sites in Saudi Arabia, where authorities said air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening. The Houthis separately claimed they had shot down a fighter jet, adding to the cycle of cross border claims and counter claims.  🔗

In Ukraine, at least five people were killed and seven others injured when a Russian drone struck a passenger bus near Nikopol in southeastern Ukraine. The attack is the latest in a series of strikes on civilian transport and infrastructure as the war grinds on.  🔗

Security concerns linked to Russia also widened beyond the battlefield, after US authorities said Russian intelligence services recruited people to carry out surveillance and killings of dissidents in the United States and Europe. A separate indictment charged five people over alleged Russian intelligence linked assassination plots, with prosecutors describing surveillance, recruitment and planned killings.  🔗  🔗

In Sudan, at least 60 small scale miners were killed when a gold mine collapsed in West Kordofan, with many others still feared trapped. The disaster adds to the country’s wider humanitarian and security crisis.  🔗

Elsewhere, the Kosovo war crimes tribunal convicted former president Hashim Thaci of four counts of war crimes and sentenced him to 25 years in prison. The ruling is one of the most significant post war legal judgments in the Balkans in recent years.  🔗

On the economic and diplomatic front, the Congressional Budget Office said the US war with Iran has cost more than 38 billion dollars by the beginning of August, with munitions shortfalls deepening. Separately, Canada and the United Arab Emirates said they were advancing their economic partnership at a Toronto investment summit, where Prime Minister Mark Carney met UAE foreign trade minister Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi.  🔗  🔗
