Russian glide bomb hits apartment block in Sumy, killing 2

A Russian glide bomb has struck an apartment building in the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy, killing two people and injuring seven, according to Ukrainian officials. Emergency crews were still working at the scene after the attack, and officials said there were concerns that more people could be trapped under the rubble. The strike hit a residential block in a city close to the Russian border, where attacks have remained frequent during the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as an "absolutely inhuman strike" in a message on Telegram. He said the bomb made a direct hit between the third and fourth floors of the building. Mr Zelensky also said four people had been rescued from the debris, including a child.

He posted images showing the damaged facade of the apartment block and rescue workers moving through the wreckage. The head of Sumy city council said the two people who died were city employees. Regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said three of the seven injured were in a serious condition.

The attack adds to the pressure on local emergency services, which have been carrying out rescue work while assessing the extent of the damage and the possibility of further casualties. Sumy has been a repeated target in an area where Moscow says it wants to establish a buffer zone. The strike comes amid a wider pattern of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

In the same period, Mr Zelensky said Russian forces had also hit a clinic in Pavlohrad and a logistics centre outside Kyiv, although he gave no casualty details for those incidents. An earlier strike on Balakliia in the northeast killed two people and wounded two, underlining the continuing reach of the conflict beyond the front line. Both sides deny targeting civilians, but residential areas have repeatedly been hit since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Sumy's location near the border has made it one of the more exposed Ukrainian cities since the start of the war. The city has faced repeated strikes as Russian forces seek to pressure areas close to the frontier. The latest attack also highlights the continuing risk to civilians living in apartment blocks and other urban housing, where a single strike can cause deaths, injuries and major structural damage.

It also places renewed attention on rescue operations and the condition of those injured. What remains unclear is whether anyone is still trapped under the rubble and how extensive the damage to the building may be. Officials have not given a final assessment of the number of people affected beyond the confirmed dead and injured.
