Xi Jinping to make state visit to the United States for talks with Trump
China has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States from 23 to 25 September and meet President Donald Trump during the trip. The announcement sets up a high-level encounter between the leaders of the world's two largest economies at a time of continuing friction over trade and security. It will be Xi's first state visit to the United States since the latest round of talks between the two governments intensified.

Beijing's foreign ministry said the visit is being made at Trump's invitation. A ministry statement said the two sides would work to deepen what it called a constructive strategic stability relationship, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and manage differences appropriately. Foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks on Monday, confirming the timing and the planned meetings.
The trip will be the second summit between Xi and Trump in 2026, following Trump's visit to Beijing in May. It will also be their third face-to-face meeting since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. The two governments have been trying to preserve a fragile trade truce announced in October 2025 after months of tariff tensions, and that truce was reinforced at the May summit.
The agenda is expected to include trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence, Iran, Ukraine and Taiwan. Those issues reflect the breadth of the disputes between Washington and Beijing, ranging from economic policy to global security and technology competition. The meeting is therefore likely to be watched closely by governments and markets for signs of whether the two sides can keep tensions contained.

The confirmation also matters because the relationship between the two countries has been marked by repeated attempts to stabilise ties without resolving their core disagreements. The May summit in Beijing was presented as part of that effort, but the latest visit shows that both sides still see direct leader-to-leader contact as necessary.
