Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington has so far been defined by ceremony, warm language and few visible signs of progress on major disputes. He was welcomed with a red carpet and a military flyover at a military air base on Wednesday before an honour-guard arrival at the White House on Thursday morning. The public tone has been notably cordial, even as the two sides continue to face significant differences on security, technology and trade-related issues.

In remarks before the formal meetings, Xi announced that China would send pandas and launch a new student exchange programme. He said the two countries should keep advancing friendship between their peoples and work together to build a better world. He added that decisions made in these areas could promote peace and prosperity for decades. The visit has also included carefully staged symbolism that appears designed to project stability in the relationship. The meeting matters because the relationship between Washington and Beijing has broad implications for global security, markets and technology policy.
