Day News Recap: Floods, drone attacks and Middle East tensions dominate a grim global day

At least 62 people have been killed in northern India after days of heavy rain and flooding in Uttar Pradesh, with officials saying the water has now begun to ease even as damage and displacement remain severe. In Germany, authorities said explosive laden drones struck a Ukrainian Antonov aircraft at Leipzig Airport after it had been refuelled, in what police are treating as a suspected Russian hybrid attack. The incident has deepened concern over sabotage risks at critical infrastructure.  🔗

Violence also escalated in Africa, where South African police said 28 people were now confirmed dead in two separate mass shootings hours apart. In Ethiopia, heavy fighting in the north spread into Afar as the Tigray People's Liberation Front pushed beyond Tigray, with Addis Ababa accusing Sudan and Egypt of involvement.  🔗  🔗

The Middle East remained highly volatile. Iraq is seeking alternative oil export routes after the Strait of Hormuz blockade cut off most sea based trade and slashed revenues, while Donald Trump rejected Iran's proposal for a seven day reopening of the waterway and said talks with Tehran could resume next week. On the front lines, BBC reporting from south western Yemen described renewed fighting near Taiz, where Saudi backed pro government forces are trying to push back Houthi fighters. In Israel, hundreds entered the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem under police protection as holiday restrictions tightened, and the UK said it would take a tougher stance on Israel's actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Ukraine came under fresh attack when a Russian drone hit the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv, killing at least one person and wounding three others. In the UK, counter terrorism police continued to investigate five British nationals arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of preparing a terror attack, while Iran denied any link to the case.  🔗  🔗

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea said newly planted North Korean landmines were likely behind explosions in the Demilitarised Zone that injured three soldiers, and it later protested to Ukraine over the secret transfer of two captured North Korean soldiers. In the Americas, a powerful nor'easter flooded parts of New Jersey and New York City and left tens of thousands without power, while in Venezuela hundreds rallied for Maria Corina Machado's return and for elections. Europe also saw political and diplomatic strain. Serbia called a snap parliamentary election for 25 October amid months of student led protest, the European Commission planned to delay the EU methane emissions law, and the Kremlin said Russia US arms control talks were far behind schedule.
