Russian strike on Kyiv damages medical facilities and kills one

A Russian attack on Kyiv killed one person and wounded eight, according to the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko. The strike also damaged medical facilities, a university dormitory and nearby civilian infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital. The attack came as Russia continued intensified drone and missile strikes on Ukraine in recent weeks.

Klitschko said blast damage shattered windows in an intensive care unit at one medical facility, while another facility in the same district also had windows broken in two wards. He said neither patients nor medical staff were wounded in those buildings. In a separate part of the city, a building in a non-residential area was hit, with preliminary reports indicating one fatality near a supermarket.

A strike near a dormitory belonging to one of Kyiv's universities shattered windows and wounded a 20-year-old woman, Klitschko said. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian ballistic missiles struck the grounds of a university in Kyiv and the surrounding area, including a park, a metro station area and residential buildings. He said the missiles hit crowded areas and that there was no military facility nearby.

The attack underlines the continuing pressure on Ukraine's capital, which has been under near-constant alert as Russia has stepped up air strikes. Kyiv, a city of around three million people, has repeatedly been targeted during the war, with civilian infrastructure often among the sites affected. Damage to medical facilities is particularly significant because hospitals and clinics are meant to remain protected under international humanitarian norms.

The timing also matters because the strikes came hours before a truce in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky was expected to begin after months of reports of severe shortages of food, water and medicine there. Russia said it would consider more local truces for humanitarian purposes, but also said it would not slow the overall pace of the war. The sides are also preparing to restart stalled talks under US mediation next month, adding diplomatic weight to the latest escalation.

What remains unclear is the full extent of the damage across Kyiv and whether the death toll could rise. It is also not yet clear what specific weapons were used in the strike or whether additional attacks followed later in the night. Further official updates are likely to focus on casualty figures, the condition of the wounded and the scale of damage to health facilities and university property.
