US Reviews Iranian Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Conflict

The White House has confirmed that US President Donald Trump met with his national security advisers on Monday to review a proposal from Iran.

The plan aims to halt Iran's joint conflict with Israel, reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, and delay negotiations over Tehran's nuclear programme until after the war ends.

US media reports indicate that Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal, primarily because it postpones discussions on Iran's nuclear activities.

According to an official briefed on the meeting, Trump insists that the nuclear issue be addressed at the start of any negotiations.

The proposal comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Tehran will not enter negotiations while the US maintains restrictions on Iranian ports.

The conflict escalated following joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran, leading to a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan on April 8.

However, the truce has been strained due to disputes over maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz and US measures targeting Iranian ports.

Additionally, a parallel conflict involving Israel and Lebanon has contributed to regional tensions.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Monday, where he indicated that Tehran is considering a US request to restart negotiations.

Araghchi emphasized the strength of Iran's strategic partnership with Russia and welcomed Moscow's support for diplomatic efforts amid regional instability.

Araghchi's visit follows trips to Pakistan and Oman, countries involved in mediating the conflict.
