Israeli strikes kill 20 in southern Lebanon as ceasefire frays

Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed 20 people on Sunday, according to Lebanon's health ministry, in one of the deadliest days since a ceasefire began just over two weeks ago.

The ministry said 77 people have been killed since Thursday.

It said the figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but added that two of the dead and 14 of the injured were children.

Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah, while accusing the group of firing hundreds of rockets and drones.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire, and diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting have so far failed.

The latest deaths underline how fragile the truce remains despite talks between Israel and Lebanon in the US.

Those discussions were the first direct ambassador-level contact in decades, but they have not produced tangible results on the ground.

On Monday, Israeli Army spokesman Avichay Adraee urged residents in several villages to move at least 1km from their homes.

The villages are outside the "yellow line", a strip of Israeli-occupied territory extending roughly 10km from the border, which Israel says it continues to operate in against threats.
