Israel strikes Beirut in first attack since ceasefire with Hezbollah

Israel has carried out an air strike in Beirut for the first time since it and Hezbollah agreed a ceasefire last month.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike targeted a senior Hezbollah official, while a joint statement from him and Defence Minister Israel Katz said the army had struck in Beirut to target the commander of Hezbollah's Radwan force.

The statement said the commander was being targeted in an attempt to neutralise him, and said Radwan operatives under his command had been responsible for firing at Israeli communities and attacks on Israeli soldiers.

The strike raises fresh questions about the durability of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

It also comes as Tehran weighs a peace deal proposal put forward by the US.

The attack is the first on the Lebanese capital in weeks, and follows a period in which both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.

The earlier truce had brought cautious calm to Beirut's southern suburbs, where residents had returned after the fighting.

Hezbollah has not yet publicly responded to the Israeli claim, and it remains unclear how the strike will affect the ceasefire or whether there will be further retaliation.
