UAE says it intercepted Iranian missiles and drones amid Strait of Hormuz tensions

The United Arab Emirates said its air defences were engaging missile and drone threats from Iran early on Friday, in a further test of the fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran.

The latest reported attack came a day after exchanges of fire around the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil and liquefied natural gas flows.

Few immediate details were available about the incident in the UAE.

US President Donald Trump said three US destroyers transited the strait under fire and were not damaged.

He later said the ceasefire was still in effect and played down the exchange.

Iran's top joint military command accused the US of violating the ceasefire by striking an Iranian oil tanker, another ship and civilian areas on Qeshm Island, Bandar Khamir and Sirik.

It said Iranian forces responded by attacking US military vessels east of the strait and south of Chabahar.

The confrontation matters because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most sensitive maritime chokepoints.

Any escalation there can quickly affect shipping, energy markets and security across the Gulf.
