Russia and Ukraine trade ceasefire accusations during Victory Day truce

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of breaching separate ceasefires declared around Victory Day commemorations, as both sides reported continued attacks after the truce began.

The Russian defence ministry said there had been more than 1,000 violations in the conflict zone, including artillery and drone strikes.

Moscow's mayor said the city had been targeted by drones since the ceasefire began at midnight local time.

Ukraine said Russian forces had continued to strike its positions after the truce took effect.

Russia said it had carried out a "mirror response" to the violations.

The claims matter because the ceasefire was meant to cover one of the most sensitive dates in Russia's political calendar, with security already tightened in Moscow ahead of the Victory Day parade.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire for 8-9 May ahead of Saturday's commemorations, while Kyiv had earlier called for an indefinite truce starting on 6 May.

Russia has warned Ukraine not to try to attack the parade in Red Square.

The Russian defence ministry also said Ukraine was continuing to strike civilian targets in border areas of the Kursk and Belgorod regions.
