Trump says Russia and Ukraine will observe three-day ceasefire and prisoner swap
US President Donald Trump has said Russia and Ukraine will observe a three-day ceasefire from 9 May to 11 May, alongside a prisoner swap involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said all directly destructive warfare would be suspended during the period.
He said the pause would mark the end of World War Two for Russians and described it as a possible beginning of the end of the war.
The announcement comes as Russia has separately declared a ceasefire from 8 May to 9 May for Victory Day commemorations in Moscow.
Ukraine has proposed an open-ended ceasefire and urged Russia to reciprocate.
The timing matters because the war has now entered its fourth year and peace efforts have stalled in recent months.
Any pause in fighting would be closely watched for signs that it could lead to broader negotiations.
The row also says Moscow is demanding that Kyiv pull back troops from eastern Donetsk, which Russia has failed to capture, while Ukraine says it will not cede territory it controls.
It is not clear how the ceasefire would be monitored or whether both sides have agreed to the same terms.
