Ukraine says it struck Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region
Ukraine says it carried out a long-range drone strike on the Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region, causing a large fire at the site. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the facility had been hit and shared video showing flames and black smoke rising from what appeared to be the refinery. The attack was reported on Thursday and is the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy said he thanked the Unmanned Systems Forces and the Special Operations Forces for what he described as a precise operation. The Special Operations Forces said they had worked with Ukraine's Security Service to carry out the mission. Russian regional authorities later said two people had died and several others had been injured as a result of the strike, while the governor of Samara region, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, reported a large fire at the scene.
The refinery is in western Russia, in the Samara region, and the strike adds to pressure on a sector that has become a repeated target in the war. Ukraine has been stepping up retaliatory long-range attacks in recent weeks, particularly against oil infrastructure. Kyiv said on Wednesday that it had hit another refinery in Kstovo, underlining a pattern of strikes aimed at facilities linked to Russia's fuel supply and war economy.
The incident comes against the backdrop of a wider escalation in drone warfare between the two countries. Ukraine said over the weekend it launched one of its largest drone attacks since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, with Russian air defences reporting more than 550 drones intercepted across the country. Zelenskyy has argued that Ukraine's responses to Russia's attacks are justified, while Moscow has continued near-daily missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities since February 2022.

Energy infrastructure has become a central part of the conflict because it affects both military logistics and domestic supply. Strikes on refineries can disrupt fuel production, create repair costs and force authorities to divert air defences and emergency services. For Ukraine, such attacks are also presented as a way to increase the cost of Russia's war effort without relying only on battlefield engagements.
What remains unclear is the full extent of the damage at the Syzran refinery and whether production has been affected. It is also not clear how long repairs may take or whether there will be further consequences for fuel supply in the region. The next developments to watch are any additional Russian assessments of the strike, further Ukrainian claims about the operation and whether the recent pattern of attacks on oil infrastructure continues.
