Trump declared in excellent health after annual medical exam at Walter Reed

US President Donald Trump has been declared in excellent health after his annual medical exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. A White House memo said he is fully fit to carry out the duties of commander-in-chief and head of state. The assessment also said he scored 30 out of 30 on a standard cognitive test.

The memo was issued on Friday by Capt Sean Barbabella, who said Trump has strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function. Trump visited Walter Reed on Tuesday for the examination and later wrote on social media that everything had checked out perfectly. It was his third known check-up since returning to the White House last year.

The report said Trump, who turns 80 next month, was within normal limits on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a common screening tool for cognitive health. It also said he had gained 14lb, or 6.3kg, since his medical exam in April 2025. Barbabella said the president had been advised on diet, physical activity and continued weight loss.

The memo added that Trump's cardiac age was estimated to be about 14 years younger than his chronological age. It said his demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements and regular physical activity, continued to support his overall well-being. The doctor also said Trump was up to date on preventive screenings and immunisations.

The update comes after earlier concern over bruised hands and swollen legs, which prompted speculation about his health. In July, it was revealed that he had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a vein condition that can cause blood to pool in the lower limbs and lead to swelling. The latest memo said there was still slight lower leg swelling, but noted improvement from last year.

The report also addressed bruising on Trump's hand, describing it as consistent with minor soft tissue irritation linked to frequent handshaking while taking aspirin for cardiovascular prevention. It said the bruising was a common and benign effect of aspirin therapy. The memo added that he is also taking two cholesterol control drugs.

What remains unclear is whether the latest examination will ease continuing public scrutiny of the president's age and fitness for office. The White House has not indicated whether any further medical updates are planned. For now, the official assessment presents Trump as medically stable, while noting ongoing monitoring of weight and minor leg swelling.
