Day News Recap: Wildfires, Iran tensions and Europe security dominate a crowded day of news

France and Spain faced a worsening wildfire emergency, with more than 360,000 people evacuated across both countries as blazes spread through the southwest and into Gironde, south of Bordeaux. French officials ordered another 55,000 people to leave homes and holiday accommodation as firefighters tried to stop the fire reaching Bordeaux.  🔗  🔗

In southwest France, crews were still battling the Gironde blaze as it burned through large areas and pushed evacuation numbers higher, while in County Tipperary the Slievenamon wildfire had reduced significantly, although firefighters were still tackling hotspots. In Scotland, residents of Nethy Bridge were allowed home after the Cairngorms wildfire major incident was stood down.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Security tensions around Iran remained high after a pause in US airstrikes continued, even as Washington weighed wider escalation. The Pentagon also faced accusations that it had hidden or downplayed rising US troop casualties in the Iran war, with reported deaths rising to 18 and injuries also increasing.  🔗  🔗

There were further signs of regional instability at sea and in the air, with an oil tanker exploding in the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine, Romania shooting down a third drone in three days after repeated Black Sea airspace incursions, and Iran accusing Ukraine of a deadly attack on a merchant ship in the Caspian Sea.  🔗  🔗  🔗

In the Middle East, Donald Trump was reported to have switched aircraft after an Iranian proxy threat during NATO summit travel, while the UK said it would not be intimidated by Iran's threats. Separately, the EU imposed sanctions on six more people over human rights abuses in Iran, and Iran's government accused state broadcaster IRIB of censorship over coverage of President Masoud Pezeshkian's remarks on talks with the US.  🔗  🔗  🔗  🔗

Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories saw more violence and arrests. Israeli forces detained more than 70 suspects in the West Bank after clashes near Tell and a raid on Nablus hospital, while a wider crackdown saw settlers attack mosques and villages. Elsewhere in Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo said its latest Ebola outbreak had passed 1,309 deaths, with cases rising to 2,973. In Tunisia, thousands marched in central Tunis to demand President Kais Saied's resignation and mark five years since he suspended parliament and took emergency powers.  🔗  🔗

Across Asia, Typhoon Noul weakened inland after landfall in Guangdong, but still brought strong winds, heavy rain, evacuations and flight cancellations. In the South China Sea, 18 people were missing after a Vietnamese cargo ship sank, prompting a joint search by Chinese and Vietnamese authorities. In India, Jammu and Kashmir Police executed a court proclamation against Pakistan based terror handler Mohammad Qasim in the Katra and Narwal blasts case, while the defence minister ruled out talks with Pakistan except on Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and warned of a harsh response.  🔗  🔗  🔗  🔗

Political developments also continued in India and Australia. A five week student protest in Delhi ended after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, and in Australia an Australian tribunal said three Israeli siblings may be entitled to protection visas because they could face persecution if returned to Israel over refusal to serve in the Gaza war.
