Breakfast News Recap: Iran tightens Hormuz terms as Ukraine, Gaza and Pacific tensions deepen

Iran has added fresh demands to talks with Oman on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, raising new uncertainty over one of the world’s most important shipping routes as the security and military leadership broadens the conditions for any deal.  🔗

In the Middle East, fighting and pressure points widened on several fronts. Lebanese soldiers were wounded in southern Lebanon while dealing with unexploded ordnance in Zawtar al Gharbiyah, with Beirut saying Israeli troops had entered the area, while in Yemen government forces counterattacked Houthi positions after renewed shelling of Marib city.  🔗  🔗

In Gaza, civil defence crews recovered 19 bodies from the rubble of the destroyed Karam residential building in Gaza City after four days of searching, with most of the dead believed to be from the same family.  🔗

Israel also moved to expropriate about 450 acres of land around the ancient Sebastia archaeological site in the occupied West Bank, a step local landowners say will further entrench control over the area.  🔗

Ukraine warned it could enter winter with virtually no working thermal power plants after Russian strikes killed four people in the Kyiv region, while Kyiv said its 40 day strike campaign inside Russia had hit oil and gas infrastructure more than 100 times.  🔗  🔗

Elsewhere in Europe and the wider security picture, the Royal Navy said it spent 21 days in July shadowing Russian vessels in the Dover Strait and the North Sea, reflecting a rise in activity around UK waters.  🔗 Turkiye also said its new defence pact with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is not aimed at Iran, even as questions remain over how the Article 5 style arrangement would work in practice.  🔗

In the Asia Pacific, China issued its highest typhoon warning as Typhoon Dolphin neared the eastern coast, triggering mass flight cancellations, transport disruption and evacuations.  🔗 In Australia, the Transport Safety Bureau opened an investigation after a Jetstar plane braked to avoid a Qatar Airways aircraft in a near miss at Sydney Airport that injured a cabin crew member.  🔗

In North America, British Columbia’s wildfire emergency deepened as the Bald Range fire spread rapidly in the province’s southern interior and forced more than 20,000 evacuations, while in Utah a firefighting helicopter crashed during operations on the Widemouth 2 fire near Richfield, killing the pilot and one crew member.  🔗  🔗
