Russian strikes kill Ukrainian woman as NATO jet downs drone over Romania

Russian missile and drone strikes have killed at least one person and wounded seven others in Ukraine, while a NATO air-policing jet shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace. The incidents were reported on Sunday and form part of the same wider escalation in cross-border attacks and airspace violations. The Ukrainian cities of Kryvyi Rig and Kyiv were both hit in the latest wave of strikes.

In Kryvyi Rig, a woman was killed and six other people were wounded in a missile and drone attack, according to the region's governor. In Kyiv, authorities said the capital was under ballistic missile attack late on Saturday, with one person wounded and fires breaking out at non-residential sites in the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts. The Romanian Defence Ministry said a Spanish F-18 fighter jet on NATO air-policing duty shot down a drone that had illegally breached Romanian airspace.

Romania said this was the fourth drone shot down in the country this year. The Defence Ministry did not specify the drone's origin, although it has previously blamed Russia for similar incidents. In July, a Romanian jet shot down a suspected Russian drone, and in May a stray drone injured two people in the city of Galati after colliding with a building.

Romania shares a 634-kilometre border with Ukraine, and its authorities have repeatedly dealt with drone incursions linked to the war next door. The latest strikes underline how the conflict continues to affect civilians far from the front line. Russia has carried out near-daily missile and drone attacks across Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in early 2022, with residential and non-residential areas both coming under fire.

The war has also affected regional security beyond Ukraine, including airspace over NATO territory and shipping routes in the Black Sea. The timing is significant because civilian casualties in Ukraine reached their highest level since 2022 in July, according to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission, which said at least 437 people were killed and 2,610 injured. That broader pattern gives added weight to the latest deaths and injuries in Kryvyi Rig and Kyiv.

It also shows how air defence responses in neighbouring countries have become part of the conflict's wider security picture. Russia and Ukraine have both increasingly used drones to strike targets deep behind the front lines, while each side accuses the other of escalating the war. In Russia on Sunday, authorities said more than 100 drones were heading towards Moscow overnight and that three people were wounded after debris fell at several sites.

What remains unclear is the origin of the drone shot down over Romania and whether the latest attacks will lead to any immediate change in the pace of cross-border strikes. Officials are likely to continue assessing damage, casualties and the trajectory of the drone incidents in the coming hours.
