Day News Recap: Ukraine under renewed attack as Middle East tensions and global probes deepen

Russia stepped up pressure on Ukraine with drones hitting Kyiv’s Pivdennyi bridge and disrupting public transport, while officials said overnight strikes also damaged sites in Kyiv, Odesa and other areas in a heavy combined assault on the energy grid. In a separate warning that underlined the wider confrontation with NATO, Russia said it could use its full arsenal, including nuclear weapons, if the alliance tried to cut off Kaliningrad. Moscow is also planning a sharp rise in defence spending in 2027, with government documents reportedly showing 17.1 trillion roubles earmarked for the military.  🔗  🔗

Fighting in Sudan has intensified in Kordofan, now described as one of the main battlegrounds in the war, with drone strikes spreading across North, West and South Kordofan and the front line shifting across key areas.  🔗

In the Middle East, Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least seven Palestinians in separate attacks, even as tensions over the ceasefire remained high. Palestinians in Gaza are also preparing to bury the remains of 105 people recovered from the site of an Israeli strike in Gaza City in October 2023.  🔗  🔗

At Jerusalem’s Al Aqsa Mosque compound, hundreds of Israelis entered the site during Sukkot, despite access restrictions, adding to already fraught religious and political tensions in the city.  🔗

The Flydubai cockpit stabbing has widened into a major investigation after a co pilot allegedly stabbed the captain on a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight over Saudi Arabia. UAE prosecutors are now examining whether the incident may have had a terrorist link.  🔗  🔗

Across Europe, French school protests spread nationwide, with security forces detaining 625 people during blockades and clashes outside high schools, and Finland opened a probe into suspected break ins at MPs’ homes in the Helsinki area as possible foreign interference. In the Americas and Asia Pacific, India hardened its tone toward the Trump administration over tariffs, terrorism and Washington’s approach to Pakistan, while the United States removed Syria from its arms export ban list and the Senate rejected a bill targeting AI data centre electricity costs. Financial glimpse

Asia Pacific opened firmer, with Tokyo leading gains as the Nikkei 225 rose 1.1% and the ASX 200 added 0.5%, while Hong Kong and South Korea slipped and gold stayed strong as oil eased.  🔗

Europe traded lower, with the CAC 40, FTSE 100, DAX and Euro Stoxx 50 all under pressure, alongside a sharp fall in Brent crude and a firmer gold price.  🔗  🔗

Wall Street finished mixed to lower, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Russell 2000 weaker while the Nasdaq edged higher, as Tesla sank and banks, defence and energy shares came under pressure.  🔗  🔗
