Breakfast News Recap: Russia widens strikes as Yemen front heats up and Sudan rejects talks

Russia carried out a wide overnight strike on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, with Ukrainian officials confirming at least two deaths as Moscow described the assault as a massive strike.  🔗

In Sudan, army chief Abdel Fattah al Burhan rejected negotiations and vowed to retake every area held by the Rapid Support Forces, as the conflict widened further.  🔗

Yemen saw a sharp escalation on several fronts. The internationally recognised government said Houthi missiles and drones targeted Aden International Airport, forcing the diversion of a passenger flight, while another report said two missiles hit the airport early Wednesday with no casualties reported.  🔗 🔗

Government aligned forces also said they had launched Operation Dawn of Yemen and pushed a renewed offensive on the Red Sea coast, with gains reported near the Bab al Mandeb strait and coalition air support intensifying. Separate reports said troops were trying to retake the strategic al Waziiya district in Taiz and advance along the coast.  🔗 🔗 🔗

Maritime security in the region was also under pressure after a Panamanian flagged tanker, On Peace, was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, injuring crew members and causing a fire before Oman evacuated the wounded.  🔗

Elsewhere in the Middle East and Africa, Libya's eastern based House of Representatives elected a new speaker, ending Aguila Saleh's 12 year run at the head of the chamber. In Mali, Tuareg separatists said they were carrying out a controlled withdrawal from Kidal after sustained air strikes and a ground assault.  🔗 🔗

In London, three Iranian men went on trial accused of spying for Iran on UK based journalists and preparing an attack on dissident media figures, while police in the RAF Fairford investigation made a seventh arrest, detaining a 22 year old British man on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.  🔗 🔗

In the UK energy debate, Equinor warned the country could become less attractive for investment if Rosebank and Jackdaw are not approved, and a separate investigation was opened into 10 military training sites in England after allegations of rape and sexual assault at the Army Foundation College and other locations.  🔗 🔗

Across Europe, the European Commission proposed tighter safeguards for future EU members to prevent democratic backsliding, while EU trade negotiators headed to China for crunch talks on cheap hybrid car imports. Other developments included Kenya confirming its first Ebola case after a death in Nairobi linked to travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela facing mounting anger over power cuts, Kosovo's political deadlock deepening amid protests and election risk, and Anduril announcing a $3.7bn investment in a Maryland shipyard after a $2.9bn US Navy submarine parts contract. European markets opened mixed, with the Euro Stoxx 50 and DAX higher, the FTSE 100 lower, Brent softer and natural gas sharply higher.  🔗
