Russia pauses strikes in Kherson as Oleshky ceasefire takes effect for aid mission
Russia has suspended strikes in Ukraine's Kherson region as a localised ceasefire took effect on Tuesday to allow a humanitarian mission into the occupied town of Oleshky. The pause began at 01:00 GMT, according to the Russian Defence Ministry, and is intended to create a window for aid deliveries and evacuations. The arrangement is linked to a mission led by the United States' First Lady, Melania Trump, with additional involvement from Pope Leo.

The ceasefire was announced on October 23 and is due to last through Saturday, or longer, according to the report. Negotiators involved in the mission said doctors, medicines, food supplies and water would be taken into Oleshky before evacuation corridors are opened. The town remains under Russian control and is described as being in acute need of food, medicine and other basic supplies.
The mission is also being presented as part of wider efforts to revive peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv. Up to 2,000 people are believed to remain in Oleshky, according to the United Nations, with many unable to leave because of explosive mines and drone attacks in the area. The town had a pre-war population of about 24,000 and lies on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, opposite Kherson city, which is held by Ukrainian forces.
Russian troops seized Oleshky during the early days of the February 2022 invasion and have controlled it since then. The town has also suffered extensive damage and was badly affected by flooding after the destruction of the nearby Kakhovka Dam in 2023. The ceasefire matters because it is one of the few recent arrangements aimed at creating limited humanitarian access in a war that has repeatedly frustrated broader truce efforts.

Even a short pause in fighting can be significant in a front-line area where civilians face shortages, damaged infrastructure and the risk of mines and drones. It also highlights the continuing role of outside intermediaries in trying to secure practical steps between Russia and Ukraine, even as deep mistrust remains. The mission's focus on food, medicine and evacuation corridors underlines the immediate civilian stakes.
Oleshky's situation reflects the wider humanitarian strain in occupied and front-line parts of southern Ukraine. The town's location across the river from Ukrainian-held Kherson city has made it strategically exposed throughout the war. Its occupation since 2022, combined with later flood damage, has left it vulnerable to supply shortages and movement restrictions.
The reported involvement of Melania Trump and Pope Leo also gives the arrangement unusual diplomatic visibility, even though the ceasefire itself is localised and limited in scope. What remains unclear is how many people will be reached by the mission, how safely evacuations can be carried out, and whether the pause in strikes will hold beyond the planned window. It is also not yet clear whether the arrangement will lead to any broader progress in ceasefire or peace talks.
