Russian strikes hit Ukraine as Kyiv ceasefire begins
Russian drone and missile attacks continued in Ukraine after Kyiv's unilateral ceasefire took effect at midnight, according to Ukrainian officials.
Authorities said the attacks hit several regions on Wednesday morning, including Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih.
Ukraine's air force said Russia had launched two ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 108 drones since 6pm local time on Tuesday.
Officials said one person was killed and three others were wounded in the morning strikes.
In Sumy, a drone attack on a civilian car killed a passenger and wounded the driver, while in Kharkiv a drone strike damaged seven private buildings and left one woman with an acute stress reaction.
The reported attacks came hours after Kyiv began observing its unilateral ceasefire, adding to tensions around competing pauses announced by Ukraine and Russia this week.
Moscow has said its own pause is linked to Victory Day commemorations on 9 May.
Ukraine had already reported heavy strikes before the ceasefire deadline, with officials saying at least 28 people were killed in attacks across the country.
Those earlier strikes included damage in Poltava, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Odesa, Chernigiv and Sumy.
In Zaporizhzhia, regional officials said Russian forces hit an industrial infrastructure facility early on Wednesday.
The city had also suffered a deadly attack on Tuesday, when 12 people were reported killed.
In Kramatorsk, Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes hit the city centre and killed six people, revising an earlier toll of five.
