Day News Recap: Iran nuclear standoff deepens as Yemen, Indonesia and Ukraine tensions persist

Iran has escalated its dispute with the UN nuclear watchdog by blocking IAEA inspectors, after the agency said Tehran had not provided information on declared nuclear materials or facilities as talks over the Hormuz issue neared completion.  🔗

In the Middle East, Yemen’s internationally recognised government said it launched air strikes on Houthi positions across several provinces, while the group continued to claim drone activity. Separately, aid concerns deepened as vaccine shortages in Houthi held areas left about five million children without routine immunisations.  🔗  🔗

Violence also flared in the occupied West Bank, where a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli forces after a 19 year old settler was critically injured in a stabbing near Usarin.  🔗

In Europe, thousands attended the funeral of Ratko Mladic in Belgrade, prompting fresh EU condemnation of the former Bosnian Serb commander convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. On the Russia and Ukraine front, the Kremlin kept its hardline demands after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow, though it said peace talks with Ukraine and the United States could still resume. At the same time, Russia and North Korea opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, Finland unveiled a 200km fence on its eastern frontier, and a Telegram propaganda network was exposed using fake sexual violence bait to push users towards pro Russia channels.  🔗  🔗  🔗  🔗  🔗

In Asia Pacific, Indonesia remained badly disrupted after the Anak Krakatau eruption, with airports still closed and schools shifted to remote learning because of ash, while a separate volcanic eruption stranded more than 340,000 passengers and forced nearly 3,000 flight cancellations. Elsewhere in Asia, China injected 360 billion yuan, about 53.6 billion dollars, into eight state owned banks and insurers to support a slowing economy, and the Philippines warned China could exploit cuts to US South Korea military drills. In the Americas, at least 10 people were killed and 60 wounded when fireworks detonated during a village festival in Santa Maria Canchesda in central Mexico.
