Day News Recap: Middle East tensions deepen as Gaza, Iran and Ukraine drive global headlines

Israel and the wider Middle East dominated the day, with ministers in Jerusalem advancing proposals for removing Palestinians from Gaza even as the United States rejected forced transfer, and the UN warned that clearing Gaza rubble on a large scale could destroy evidence linked to alleged war crimes and genocide related crimes.  🔗  🔗

Fighting also intensified elsewhere in the region, with Israeli air strikes in southern Lebanon killing 13 people, including women and children, in one of the deadliest attacks there since the ceasefire period began.  🔗 In the occupied West Bank, Israeli raids killed a 29 year old Palestinian man near Nablus and brought arrests and closures across the territory.  🔗

Iran remained at the centre of a widening confrontation. The IAEA said it still cannot verify Iran's declared nuclear material more than a year after losing access to key facilities, while Western powers push for a UN referral.  🔗 Amnesty International said three strikes carried out by the United States and Israel in Tehran in March may amount to war crimes.  🔗 Tehran also raised petrol prices again, and warned South Korea of serious consequences if it interferes in military operations linked to the Strait of Hormuz.  🔗  🔗

Pressure around the Gulf and Red Sea continued to build, with Saudi Arabia carrying out retaliatory strikes after Houthi drones and missiles hit energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure in the kingdom's south.  🔗 Qatar said reopening the Strait of Hormuz without conditions is a top priority in its mediation efforts, while Qatar and the United Arab Emirates both urged Gulf states to strengthen their own defences and not rely on the United States alone.  🔗  🔗

In Ukraine, a Russian drone struck the headquarters of the We Are Ukraine television channel in Kyiv, partially collapsing the building and injuring at least one person, as the death toll from the wider attack rose.  🔗 Ukraine's prosecutor general, Ruslan Kravchenko, resigned amid an anti graft probe, and the United Kingdom pledged £100m in military equipment, including Patriot missiles, to bolster Ukraine's air defences over the winter.  🔗  🔗 The Kremlin also said Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a phone call about ending the war.  🔗

Europe saw a series of political and security moves. Britain, France and Canada announced new restrictions on trade with goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.  🔗 Hungary ordered 10 Russian diplomats to leave, Germany arrested a man suspected of sabotage attacks on the electricity grid, and the EU condemned Serbian officials for attending Ratko Mladic's funeral.  🔗  🔗  🔗 In Germany, Friedrich Merz said he would stay in office after the far right Alternative for Germany won a landslide in Saxony Anhalt, while Serbia moved closer to a snap parliamentary election after proposing to dissolve parliament.  🔗  🔗

Elsewhere, the EU signed a new declaration with Greenland and Denmark in Nuuk and pledged $232m to strengthen ties with the territory, as Brussels faced renewed US annexation pressure.  🔗 Argentina said it will file criminal charges over hydrocarbon activity near the Falkland Islands, while the UK rejected renewed Argentine pressure over Malvinas sovereignty.  🔗  🔗 The Maldives asked London to reopen Chagos sovereignty talks, and Syria said it had detained former Major General Mohammed Ali Durgham over alleged links to the 1982 Hama massacre and later crackdowns.  🔗  🔗

In Asia Pacific, Nepal's rescue teams focused on three hydropower tunnels after a glacier collapse flood, with dozens of workers still feared trapped.  🔗 Indonesia reopened Jakarta's main airport and four others after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted flights.  🔗 Australia unveiled an 80 tonne flood barrier for Brisbane's Cross River Rail station, stepped up a billboard campaign in Solomon Islands amid competition with China, and saw its High Court hear a challenge to the ban on the White Australia party.  🔗  🔗  🔗
