The biggest escalation came in the Gulf, where the United States and Iran exchanged fresh strikes around the Strait of Hormuz after a ship was hit near the waterway, raising fears for shipping and the fragile ceasefire. Trump also said the United States had struck Iranian missile and drone storage sites again and repeated that Iran must never get nuclear weapons, signalling that the confrontation could widen further. The UN maritime agency said it had evacuated about 2,500 stranded seafarers from the Persian Gulf before suspending its rescue operation because of the danger.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Across Europe, a record heatwave continued to sweep east, with national temperature records broken, hospitals and transport networks under strain, and France's public health agency reporting 1,000 excess deaths linked to the extreme weather. In the Middle East and Africa, Israel said its troops will remain in southern Lebanon after a US brokered deal, while it also formally recognised the Armenian genocide in a move that further strained ties with Turkey. Security and conflict headlines also came from South Asia and the Gulf. Pakistan said militants attacked a Sindh Rangers compound in Karachi, killing four paramilitary personnel, while a separate explosion and gunfire were reported near Rangers offices in the city. In Saudi Arabia, a Saudi Aramco helicopter crashed in Ras Tanura, killing all 14 people on board.  🔗  🔗  🔗

In Europe and the former Soviet space, Ukraine said it struck two Russian oil refineries overnight, with Russian officials reporting fires, damage and at least two deaths. Natural disasters and accidents added to the toll elsewhere. Venezuela said the death toll from two earthquakes rose to 1,430, with 3,238 injured, as rescue work continued.
