Day News Recap: Iran, Ukraine and Gaza dominate a day of widening conflict and political strain

Iran said it had set new conditions to end its war with the United States, as oil prices moved above $100 and Tehran said it had passed its demands to Washington through Qatari mediators. Tehran also warned that any new US led attack would bring sustained retaliation against US bases and interests, while separately expanding a mobilisation drive linked to the Basij militia and the Revolutionary Guard with a march and recruitment push in the capital. In the Middle East, US embassies across the region issued security alerts after fresh Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, with smoke and flames seen near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh after the group claimed strikes on the capital. In Gaza, Palestinian officials said Israeli fire and airstrikes killed at least four people, including a child and the son of a health official, while Israeli settlers and officials again entered the Al Aqsa Mosque compound and performed prayers in the courtyard during the Yom Kippur period.  🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗

Ukraine and Russia traded drone attacks overnight, with the death toll in the Kyiv region rising to four, including three children, after a strike that also hit Moscow on Russia's election day. Russian authorities said a separate Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region killed at least two people and damaged a refinery and homes.  🔗 🔗

Russia's parliamentary vote continued amid cyberattacks and complaints from observers, with United Russia still expected to win. A separate report said North Korea may be preparing to send another wave of troops to support Russia's war in Ukraine, adding to the pressure on Moscow as the conflict drags on.  🔗 🔗

Germany accused Russia of a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport, deepening concerns over hybrid warfare, while German state elections in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania and Berlin increased pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz after strong gains by the far right AfD. Elsewhere in Europe, Dutch riot police dispersed several hundred far right protesters in The Hague after violence broke out at an anti immigration march, with arrests rising as officers moved in. In Asia and the Pacific, North Korea fired at least one suspected ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, prompting a regional alert, while Australia urged the United States and China to reach an artificial intelligence agreement before UN talks.
