Day News Recap: UN tensions rise as Ukraine, Gaza and regional conflicts dominate a crowded global day

World leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York traded warnings over Gaza, Ukraine and Iran, with the forum becoming a stage for competing claims, threats and diplomatic manoeuvres. On the Gaza issue, Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address the UN as scrutiny intensifies over Israel's war and occupation, while Mahmoud Abbas delivered a recorded speech after the US denied him a visa. In the Middle East, Saudi-led coalition forces said they intercepted six ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Houthis towards Taif and Yanbu, while Yemen's government-aligned forces said they repelled Houthi attacks in Taiz. Other developments included Ethiopia saying its army repelled Tigrayan attacks as fighting widened in the north, and the US reportedly withholding a visa for Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al Burhan ahead of UN talks on a ceasefire.
