Day News Recap: Kyiv hit by Russian missiles as Gaza, Iran and Sri Lanka crises deepen

Russia launched 23 ballistic missiles at Kyiv overnight, and Ukrainian air defences shot down none of them because of a shortage of interceptor missiles, with a residential building hit in the capital. On the diplomatic and military front, Ukraine is seeking defence deals with at least seven Nato countries by the end of the year, while alliance leaders are due to gather in Ankara for a summit dominated by defence spending and support for Kyiv. Separately, Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin for nearly 90 minutes and offered help to find a way to end the war, while also speaking with Zelensky.  🔗 🔗 🔗

In the Middle East, Israeli drone and air strikes killed at least four people in southern Lebanon and at least six Palestinians in Gaza, as ceasefire violations continued. Gaza's political landscape shifted as Hamas said it was stepping away from government and dissolving the body that has run the enclave for nearly two decades, opening the way for a technocratic management committee. Iranian politics and regional tensions were on display in Tehran, where huge crowds gathered for the funeral procession of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with chants against the US and Israel and calls for vengeance. In the Pacific, Super Typhoon Bavi made landfall on Rota, bringing destructive winds and torrential rain to the Northern Marianas, while China test fired a long range ballistic missile from a nuclear powered submarine into the South Pacific, drawing criticism from Australia and New Zealand. Financial glimpse

Asia Pacific markets were mixed to firmer, with Hong Kong leading gains, Australia edging up and Tokyo slipping slightly, while Seoul sold off and precious metals surged across gold, silver, platinum and palladium.  🔗

Europe opened higher, led by a sharp rise in Germany's DAX and gains in the FTSE 100, CAC 40 and Euro Stoxx 50, as precious metals rallied and Brent crude eased.  🔗

Wall Street opened higher too, with the S and P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones all advancing, alongside strong moves in gold, silver and platinum and gains in banks and defence stocks.  🔗
