Day News Recap: Kyiv hit again as Gaza, Hormuz and West Bank tensions deepen across several fronts

At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 injured in another overnight Russian attack on Kyiv, with rescue work still under way as officials warned the toll could rise. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes on the capital and surrounding region showed Ukraine urgently needed more air defences.  🔗  🔗

Ukraine also said a Russian drone chased a fruit and vegetable seller around his stall in Kherson before exploding beside his van, and Zelenskyy shared footage of the attack. Kyiv further said North Korea is deploying a missile unit with six launchers and 120 ballistic missiles to western Russia, while a Russian drone manufacturer founder was critically injured in a car bomb near Ekaterinburg.  🔗  🔗  🔗  🔗

In the Middle East, Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would not withdraw from its current lines in Gaza until Hamas had completely disarmed, and later said Israel had not agreed to the US backed Gaza plan amid coalition pressure. The UN said Gaza remains unsafe for civilians as Israeli attacks continue, with strikes hitting homes and other civilian sites.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Israel also resumed strikes in southern Lebanon while US sponsored talks with Lebanon continued in Rome, adding to regional pressure. On the Gulf shipping crisis, Donald Trump said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could come as soon as today or tomorrow, while warning Iran would be hit very hard if it did not agree. Reports also said the US, Iran and Oman were close to an interim agreement, and UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband urged Washington to help reopen the waterway before his first one to one talks with Marco Rubio.  🔗  🔗  🔗

Iran faced further pressure from the UN, which said it had executed at least 56 people since 19 March amid a crackdown on dissent. At the same time, Iranian military officials said they were using the ceasefire period to accelerate missile and drone production and repair damaged systems.  🔗  🔗

In the US political and policy sphere, Trump attacked Michigan election results and signalled a broad rollback of Endangered Species Act limits to speed energy, timber and infrastructure projects.
