Indonesia is also facing a major disaster after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Flores island, killing at least 68 people, displacing about 5,000 residents and leaving aid shortages and aftershocks to hamper rescue work.  🔗

In the Middle East, the Gaza war and wider regional tensions remained in focus as Jared Kushner prepared to meet Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv after more than two hours of talks with a Hamas delegation in Cairo, while an Israeli official said a US general would oversee Hamas disarmament under a Gaza deal.  🔗 🔗

Elsewhere in the region, the UN rights chief warned Yemen could slide back into full scale conflict if Houthi strikes continue, while a drone attack targeted the office of Iraqi Kurdistan prime minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the region’s security chief.  🔗 🔗

Russia and Ukraine traded deadly strikes for a second day, with Ukraine saying Russian attacks killed four people in Sumy and Donetsk, while Russia also moved against dissent at home by jailing anti war politician Lev Shlosberg for 11 years and one month and firing a senior state banker who warned the economy was lagging and war costs were rising.  🔗 🔗 🔗

In Europe, the EU said it plans far reaching new sanctions against Russia in the autumn, as wildfires burned across Belgium, Greece, France and Spain, with Belgium battling what is believed to be its largest modern wildfire in the High Fens and evacuations continuing.  🔗 🔗 🔗

Across the wider world, Morocco detained nearly 300 migrants near Ceuta after a renewed crossing attempt, Zambia arrested 11 people including senior opposition figures after election unrest, Mali jailed broadcaster Ras Bath and influencer Rokia Doumbia for seven years after junta criticism, and Venezuela sought the return of 31 tonnes of gold held at the Bank of England.  🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗

Asia Pacific opened mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 up 2.6% and South Korea’s Kospi surging, while Hong Kong and Australia lagged, showing a sharp split in regional risk appetite.  🔗

Europe was mixed, with Germany’s DAX higher but the FTSE 100 and CAC 40 lower, while gold extended its rally and natural gas fell sharply.  🔗

Wall Street opened firmer, led by AI chip shares, with energy, small caps and banks also higher, alongside gains in gold and Bitcoin and a softer USD/CNY.  🔗
