Day News Recap: Myanmar strike kills dozens as Middle East tensions and Europe sanctions widen

An airstrike near a market in Myanmar's Rakhine state has killed at least 49 people, according to the Arakan Army and a senior rescue official, in one of the deadliest recent attacks in the conflict zone.  🔗

In the Middle East, Iran said it is still waiting for a formal US response to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while Qatar warned that the Iran war is putting an unbearable strain on the global economy as mediation efforts continue in New York.  🔗 🔗

Tehran is also facing pressure at home, with residents stocking up on food and medicine amid fears that tighter US pressure could disrupt imports and trigger shortages, and Iran has separately filed a complaint with the International Civil Aviation Organization over US aviation sanctions.  🔗 🔗

Fighting and retaliation continued across several fronts. Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City killed Hamas commander Izz al Din al Beik, while settlers torched two homes in Jalud village in the occupied West Bank and Israeli ministers launched a new settlement there as part of an election campaign event.  🔗 🔗 🔗

In Yemen, Iran has been accused of helping Houthi gains along the western coast as Red Sea and Saudi attacks continue, and in Lebanon residents are watching Israel's election with little expectation of change along the border.  🔗 🔗 The UAE also confirmed that President Mohamed bin Zayed met Benjamin Netanyahu in Abu Dhabi amid the regional tensions.  🔗

Ukraine and Russia remained under heavy strain. Russia launched overnight strikes on Kyiv targets and two foreign flagged vessels, a Ukrainian rescue team is racing to extract teenage boys from occupied territory, and Estonia said an August arson attack on defence firm Milrem Robotics in Tallinn was ordered by Russian special services.  🔗 🔗 🔗

Moscow also reported a Tu 95 bomber crash in the Amur region that killed six crew members, and Vladimir Putin signed a decree adding 15,500 troops to the Russian army.  🔗 🔗 Separately, Russia was accused of publishing and then removing a nuclear strike blueprint on Lithuania.  🔗

Elsewhere, Nepal's storms have left at least 19 dead and 10 workers missing, Ethiopia says allied forces have captured the strategic town of Alamata in Tigray, and Somalia's army is clashing with local forces in Baidoa, leaving civilians stranded.  🔗 🔗 🔗 South Korea said North Korean mines wounded three soldiers in the DMZ, while North Korea opened its first road bridge to Russia and its envoy used a Kim family brooch at the UN General Assembly.  🔗 🔗 🔗
